Road trip! Finding the perfect road trip companion can be a difficult task.  You want someone who won’t argue with your radio choices and who won’t complain when you belt out the lyrics to your favorite songs.  You also don’t want a backseat driver who will critique your driving. For these reasons, your best furry friend makes an excellent choice for a road trip companion.

Step 1: Consult with an AAA agent to find out which hotel chains across the county will be able to accommodate you and your dog. Call the hotels directly and ask them about availability and additional costs to have your pup share your room.

Step 2: Map out a detailed route which includes the hotels you researched in Step 1. It’s not a good idea to show up to a hotel with a furry friend and no reservation.  Having a mapped out route will limit the spontaneity factor of your trip but this small compromise is worth it.

Step 3: Take your dog on a few day trips in the car prior to leaving for your cross country adventure. This will enable him to get used to being on the road and it will give you an idea of how your dog responds to being confined to a car with you.

Step 4: Purchase and/or gather all the materials you will need for the trip. Water and food are absolutely necessary, as is your dog’s leash and doggie poop bags. You might also want to bring his blanket or bed and some of his favorite toys.

Step 5: Make sure your canine companion has all of his current vaccines. Plan to pack his veterinary records with you during your travels.

Step 6: When you head out on your road trip, do not spend more than 2 hours on the road without stopping. Leash your pet each and every time you stop. Allow him to get out and stretch his legs and provide him with opportunities to relieve himself.  Keep his feeding schedule as close to normal as possible, feeding him at his regular times.

Don’t forget to pack your camera for the road trip. You’ll want to take a lot of pictures in order to preserve your memories of this special trip!
