Another break through in Opthalmology which make it possible for blind people to see with basic sight. Vision is not 100% restored but gives the person the ability to see images. A family friend of ours has cataracts at the middle of his iris' and even after surgery, there is no assurance that cataracts wont come back. The Bionic Eye breakthrough seems like one character in Star Trek where he wares these futuristic "goggles" that allow him to see more than a regular Trekkie.
A real-life mother has tried the invention and claims to be able to see her family, her granddaughter perform on stage and go out all by herself. The Bionic Eye requires wearing of sunglass-type glasses which act as your brains video camera attached to a signal processor and implanted stimulator that are connected to the vision side of the brain. One of the first recipient is Linda Moorfoot who has 16 electrodes implanted in her brain that makes her "see" in block images. Operations in London for Bionic Eye recipients are on-going, but this time around 60 electrode implants will be used to improve image resolution.
Jumping the primary hurdles of Bionic Eye research, there are plans to design a camera small enough to fit in the eye instead of having the sunglass electrode connection. It is early stages still but the future seems clearer. No qualifications have been mentioned about who is qualified for the Bionic Eye, so a lot has to be seen in the coming days.
